Lab Report Analysis

Memorandum TO: Emma Mackenzie, Writing Instructor; Montana Tech FROM: Sarah Hambidge, Montana Tech Student DATE: 6 November 2012 SUBJECT: Lab Report Analysis This memo proposes the observations and claims I collected from reviewing three different lab reports. Three fields of study are composed within this memo that includes Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Petroleum Engineering. â€Å"Electrical Filters,† (Electrical), written by Joe Schmoe, is a lab report made by a student at a university.The College Board produced an environmental lab report named, â€Å"Monitoring Air Quality,† (Air), for the purpose of student education as a lab template. Monitoring Air Quality was written by Dr. Angela C. Morrow who graduated from the University of Northern Colorado. Within the Energy Engineering field, I found, â€Å"NETL Extreme Drilling Lab Studies high temperature drilling Phenomena. † (NETL). This lab was created by the U. S. Department of Energy and was found in the work of the U. S. Government. This lab report was written by K.David Lyons, Simone Honeygan, and Thomas Mroz. All three lab reports’ features have been compared and contrasted using analytical techniques in this memo. Observation of Whole Document All three documents are close in terms of length of paper. They are in the range between 6 and 9 pages long. The NETL Drilling High Pressure High Temperature Drilling Phenomena and Electrical Filters lab reports have 4 or 5 figures to represent the purpose of the lab report. The Air Quality lab only has one figure, a picture of a tree.College Board’s Monitoring Air Quality figures were labeled underneath the pictures in regular font. The petroleum lab report used bold lettering underneath the figures. The electrical report’s figures were labeled with italics underneath the picture as well. * Paragraph styles All three labs differ strongly when it comes to the style of how the paragraphs were writt en. Drilling lab reports within Petroleum Engineering are most elaborate and long. The petroleum lab report has 3 paragraphs in the Abstract section while the other two reports have one short paragraph.The Petroleum lab includes specific numerical details such as different depths, fluid pressures, and temperatures. The other reports did not include quantities inside the opening paragraph that is why Drilling labs are more elaborate and precise when it comes to representing information. As a reader is reading the NETL Drilling Lab, they could be more confused than reading the other two labs. The quantities are not explained how they are derived very well, so this could result in a comprehension problem for a basic reader.I think this would make a reader with basic comprehension levels frustrated. * Headings According to the example lab report(Doyoyo,2002), paragraph titles should follow this format in order of title page, Abstract, Experimental Procedure, Results, Discussion, Conclus ion, Appendices, and References. The lab report composed by the College Board follows this format most concisely. The College Boards paragraphs are titled Abstract, Objectives, Introduction, Materials, Procedure, Data/Observations, Analysis, and Additional Resources.The procedure in this report is quite long because it has 3 sub headings within it that precede three different subjects. The analysis goes quite in depth as well and has 2 different parts in it. The electrical lab report follows a similar paragraph order; Objective, Background, Experiment, Results, Conclusion, and References. The background paragraph is 2 pages long; this is longer than any of the other documents. I believe in order to completely comprehend this document, you would have to know a great deal of background and have expierence in this field.The petroleum drilling lab report also follows a different format; Abstract, Introduction, Acknowledgments, and References. TheNETL Drilling lab stands out from the res t of the labs too because between the introduction and acknowledgments, there are 4 paragraphs that explain descriptions, efforts, and future plans. This lab is farthest from following the standard lab report format. The NETL Drilling Lab was written by the government so they may follow a stricter lab format than they teach in schools. They might make up their own order of headings and paragraphs because they are on top of the chain. Font choice The NETL lab Report uses ten point font in Times New Roman. The Electrical Engineering lab Report uses Times New Roman as well but its double spaced and typed in twelve point font. The environmental lab uses Calibri with twelve point font and multiple spaces between every paragraph. The NETL lab is the most professional looking lab because it looks formal and fits more information within a page than the other labs. A reader could get the most information out of the NETL lab because it is constructed elaborately but also concisely. Overall to ne The NETL lab has by far, most formal tone of voice. The lab created by the College Board is built for mainly educational purposes; therefore it uses a smaller vocabulary for easier understanding. The Electrical lab report was made by students so it’s not that complex. The NETL lab is professional because it is a work of the government. This lab uses many big words, acronyms, references within text, and many numerical conversions. The lab written by students has the least informal tone, most likely because they are least educated.Reading the Electrical Filters Lab could leave a reader lost in some places, and readers may want to read a different lab on Electrical Filters written by a doctor or someone with a professional degree. * Repetition The College Board lab report uses repititon the most because it was created by doctors and doctors are very precise with representing information. It often repeats, â€Å"Please see AP’s licensing for AP Questions and Materials. † It also repeats, â€Å"Clean Air Act,† â€Å"NAAQS,† â€Å"gypsum,† and â€Å"air quality laws. † Within the procedure the paragraphs are repetitive as well.The Electrical lab is the least repetitive but it did repeat input and output signal values. The petroleum lab repeats drilling terms and the process of deep drilling. I think the repetition in all of the labs was necessary because a basic reader would need to be reminded of the information to smoothly flow through reading the documents. Sections The sections within the 3 lab reports differ in body. Some are more like Markel’s sample(Markel,2010) than others. * Abstract The petroleum lab and environmental reflect the major focus of the lab well.The abstract concisely communicates the purpose of the lab, the approach, the results, and the significances of the findings. The electrical lab doesn’t have an abstract but sometimes instructors do not require an abstract section. The en vironmental lab does a better job at writing the abstract because it’s shorter and more direct to the point, therefore easier to understand. * Introduction The petroleum lab does the worst at the introduction. Markel (Markel, 2010, ch10), says the purpose of the lab is clearly stated. The petroleum lab is sort of confusing.It says,† The purpose of this paper and industry projects [1-5] deep wells are defined as wells drilled for oil and gas having true vertical depth (TVD) greater than 15,000 feet (4572 meters. )† The electrical report is more to the point, for example, â€Å"The objective of this lab is to build and test a first order, low-pass filter with resistors and capacitors. † The Environmental lab’s purpose statement is, â€Å"At the end of this lab, you will be able to describe and discuss several air pollutants and methods for detecting them. The environmental lab is a lab template so it is written in a future tense format rather than pas t tense like the other labs. Conclusion In reading this memo, I hope you understand my findings an key points about the three lab reports I analyzed. Electrical Filters, by Joe Schomoe, was poorly written compared to the other lab reports. It did properly use its figures and the abstract section was written correctly. This document was hard to read because the background was very long and in depth. This document also was least appealing to the eye because the lack of professionalism.College Board’s Monitoring Air Quality overall did well as serving the major purpose as a lab template for students. However this lab needs more figures and pictures because it only has one figure. The College Board also followed Markel’s lab format the closest. The repetition used by this lab made the whole document flow more as reading. The NETL Extreme Drilling Laboratory Studies High Pressure High Temperature Drilling Phenomena, is the most professional and formal written document compa red to the other two labs.It did not follow the normal lab report format, but it contained many helpful figures and tables. This lab can be confusing because it is so complex, but most information and data can be obtained from reading this lab report. In broadband transmission, the system allows two or more communication channels to share the bandwidth of the communication medium. The system uses the technique of dividing the bandwidth into frequency bands which is called frequency division multiplexing (FDM) which works only with analog signals. There is also another technique called time-division multiplexing (TDM) that supports digital signals. Figure 1, show the difference between baseband and broadband transmission mode of operation: Figure 1. Difference in the mode of operation between baseband and broadband Broadband transmission is used in the web hosting companies. This is because of the higher speeds of the broadband. With the use of broadband, people can enjoy the full range of internet services like downloading videos, music, watching movies and plying online games. Transceivers have different speeds which are measured in MHz and also specified in wavelengths. The larger the value of the fiber core of the transceivers, measured in microns, there will be more bandwidth possible but also the distance will be shorter. The 1000 Base-LX is the long wavelength with a signaling speed of 1. 25 ±100 ppm GBd. This transceiver can use both 62. 5 and 50 micron multimode fiber and it also uses single-mode fiber optic cables with distances of 440m, 550m and 5 km. Another transreceiver is the 100 Base-TX which uses 4B5B binary encoding to encode 100 Mbps data stream in a signal of 125 MHz. One pair is used for transmitting data while the other pair is used for receiving the data. Given this, one user can setup a system for full duplex communication given that there are only interfaces in the same collision domain. It is either the two computers are directly connected to each other by crossover cable or a computer directly connected to a switch. Full duplex communication result to doubling the potential throughput but not often reached more than the modest improvement. Based on Sheldon and Big Sur Multimedia (2001), link aggregation is the process of connecting together two or more data channels in order to become a single channel which appears as a single, higher-bandwidth logical link. Also this aggregated links can provide redundancy and fault tolerance if the links follow different physical path. By linking the digital lines, the link aggregation improves the access to public networks. The aggregation is also use in enterprise network to build multigigabit backbone links. It also allows the network’s backbone speed to grow increasingly when the demands on the network increases without replacing everything and buy new and expensive hardware. Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) protocol was intended for local area network (LAN) environments where in all the nodes are positioned few hundred feet from each other. The importance of the protocol is to listen up each node to the channels in a short period of time before it transmits. The main assumption of the protocol is that each node should be able to hear the transmission from every other station. But this assumption is violated in access network and this resulted to several problems. One of the serious problems encountered is the hidden transmitter problem. This occurs when the CSMA/CA cannot function properly due to a wireless node cannot hear one or more of the other nodes. And when this happen, multiple nodes attempt to transmit their data simultaneously over the shared data thus resulting to interference with each other. To address the hidden transmitter problem, the 802. 11 standard uses the protocol request to send/clear to send (RTS/CTS). Before transmitting each packet, each node transmit an RTS packet to other nodes to warn them that it is about to transmit data and after each transmission, it broadcasts CTS packet. This process is time and bandwidth consuming process and it is required for each and every transmission by each and every wireless node. But this process sill does not address the hidden transmitter problem fully because RTS/CTS packets are subjected to repeated collisions. In most applications, the wireless standard 802. 11b operating at 2. 4 ghz is ample enough. This wireless standard is the mostly widely accepted standard among the three wireless standards and also the price of the equipment is the cheapest because of the rising demand for the 802. 11g. Its distance will rely mostly on the communicating devices whether it have line of site or not. And with fewer obstacles among the transmitting and receiving devices, there will be better wireless connection and therefore much better web surfing. The 802. 11b wireless standard is good enough if using wireless route or access point only for internet usage because the connection to internet via broadband modem operates about 2mbps which is very fast. The 802. 11b transfer data at the rate of 11mbps which is sufficient for internet usage. This device saves money on equipment and gives great web surfing services. Another wireless standard being used is the 802. 11g standard. It is replacing the widely accepted standard which is the 802. 11b because both operate on the same frequency and the price drastically goes down on products. This standard is much very similar to 802. 11b because it also usually needs a line of site to achieve optical performance. Both standards, 802. 11b and 802. 11g operate at the same frequency range of 2. 4ghz and are inter-operable with each other. All the devices of 802. 11g can communicate with 802. 11 devices and the main advantage of the 802. 11g devices is that when transferring files betweens computers or networks, it is usually at a greater speed. It is recommended to use 802. 11g when using wireless connection to transfer files (data files, voice, music, and videos) around the home and office. 802. 11g standard also allows manufacturers to developed devices which work at speed of up to 108mbps because it recommended when transferring large data or audio files within LAN. Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) is a security technology that is used in wireless network. This was created by an industry trade group called the Wi-Fi Alliance which owns the trademark for the name Wi-Fi and certifies products that bear the name. WPA was created in order to response on the serious weaknesses of the previous system, the Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) and also to improve the authentication and encryption features of the WEP. It implements majority of the IEEE 802. 11i and intended to take place the place of WEP. It was designed in order to work with all wireless network interface cards but not with first generation wireless access point. Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP) is one of the key technologies behind WPA which deals with the encryption weaknesses of the WEP. Also the WAP have built-in authentication which is a key component. The WAP uses the RC4 stream cipher which has a 128-bit key and a 49-bit initialization vector (IV). With the combination of the TKIP and the RC4 stream cipher; this solves the problem of key recovery attacks which was found in WEP. In addition, the WPA provides much improved payload integrity. WPA uses a more secured message authentication code (MAC) but also termed as MIC which stand for message integrity code which is an algorithm â€Å"Michael†. MIC includes a frame counter preventing replay attacks. With the features of the WPA like having increased size of the keys and IV’s, reduced number of packets sent with related keys and adding up of a secured message verification system, it is far more difficult to break in within the system. There is one variation in WPA which is called the WPA pre shared key (WPA-PSK), which is also known as personal mode. This was designed for home and small office usage and networks which can’t afford the cost and complexity of the 802. 1X authentication server. To access the network, the user must enter a pass phrase, with 8 to 63 printable ASCII characters or 64 hexadecimal digits. This can be stored in the user’s computer with discretion under most operating system in order to avoid re-entry and must remain in the Wi-Fi access point. Protected Extensible Authentication Protocol (PEAP) securely transmits authentication information which includes password, over wired and wireless network. It is also an 802. 1x authentication type for wireless LAN’s. The PEAP is created by the Cisco Systems, Microsoft and RSA Security which is base on the Internet Draft submitted to the IETF. (Cisco Systems, 2007) The system uses only server side public key certificates which authenticate clients by creating encrypted SSL/TLS tunnel in between client and authentic server. This protects from casual inspection the resulting exchange of authentication. According to the Cisco Systems Inc. , the following are important benefits of the PEAP web security system: †¢ It relies on the Transport Layer Security (TLS) which allow non-encrypted authentication types (EAP-Generic Token Card and One Time Password (OTP)) support †¢ It uses the server-side Public-Key Infrastructure (PKI) based digital certification authentication †¢ It allows for the authentication to an extended suite of directories which include Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), Novell NDS and OTPA databases †¢ It uses the TLS in order to encrypt all the user-sensitive authentication information †¢ It supports the password change at expiration †¢ It does not display the logon username in the EAP identity response †¢ The system is not susceptible to dictionary attacks †¢ It offer dynamic privacy protection while using in combination with Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP) or the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) Also the PEAP have enterprise benefit. Based on the Cisco System Inc. , PEAP is based upon the server-side EAP-TLS. This means that organization can avoid the issue associated in the installing of digital certificates on every client machine which is required by the EAP-TLS. This provides the enterprise to choose what method of client authentication depending on their needs. PEAP authentication work in two phases: ? In phase 1, performing the server-side TLS authentication will result to creation of an encrypted tunnel and will achieve server-side authentication. One the process is done the data are encrypted with all the user-sensitive information ? For phase 2 according to the Cisco System Inc. , the client is authenticated by using methods like the EAP-GTC and the Microsoft Challenge Authentication Protocol (MS-CHAP) Public switched telephone network (PSTN) is referred as the public communication providing local, extended and long distance call telephone service. It is composed of telephone exchanges arranged in order to have nationwide telephone communication system. The system is open for those who can afford the service. Packets, pieces of the caller’s conversation are switched and then sent simultaneously to many connections to reach a receiver in the other end. All the phones in PSTN are connected in a way that any phone can call to any other phone due to all the local phone systems are connected to each other. Mitchell (2007) cited that PSTN provides the traditional Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) to establishments and residences and also some parts of the PSTN are being utilized for DSL, VoIP and other internet-based network. In much relation to internet, this provides much of the internet’s long-distance infrastructure. Internet service providers (ISP) pay the long distance provider for the access to their infrastructure and they share the circuits among users in the process called packet switching. SS7 signaling protocol support the exchange of special-purpose messages on public telephone networks. SS7 messages pass over separate channel different from the channel used for voice communication and it is referred as out of band signaling. Wireless local loop is sometimes called radio in the loop (RITL) or fixed –radio access (FRA). It is a system that connects users and subscribers to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) by the use of radio signals as substitute for copper for all part of the connection between subscriber and the switch. This includes cordless access systems; propriety fixed radio access and fixed cellular systems. One of the advantages of the wireless local loop is that it can be deployed in just weeks or months in comparison with copper wire systems which took months and years for the deployments. The instillation of the wireless local loop considerately has much lower construction cost than laying copper lines. Effects of advertising on sales Effects of Advertising on Sales: A Methodological Critique There is a reliable relationship between advertising and sales, but one in which sales lead advertising rather than vice versa Hsu, Darrat and Zhong (2002). This review focuses on a limited number of articles following Hsu, Darrat and Zhong from major journals in advertising and marketings thant focus on advertising and sales relationship Danaher, Bomefrer and Dhar, 2008; Esteve and Requena, 2006; Frank, Bruce and Majumdar, 2007; Kim, 2005; Leache and Reekie, 1996; Newstead, Taylor and Kennedy, 2009; Taylor, Kennedy and Sharp, 2009; Yoo and Mandhachitra, 2003; Zhou, Zhou and Ouyang, 2003. The first fragment of the paper discuss about the methodological oreintation and in the second portion it focuses on the argument whether there is any effect of advertising on sales. Methodological Orientaions Hsu, Darrat and Zhong (2002) tried to empirically examine the Gallbaraithian Hypothesis that advertising aggregate demand to the changing industrial development and consequently stimulates sales. (2002, p.175). To do so, they have chosen three aggregate variables wrapping from period of 1948 to 1995. The variables they selected are aggregate advertising expenditures (A) obtained from the Direct Marketing Associations Statistical Fact Book; aggregate sales (S) measured by personal consumption expenditures and obtained from the SP/DRI Database; and personal disposable income (I) culled from various issues of the Statistical Abstracts of the United States (2002, p.178). They have tested two competing hypothesis simultaneously using three variable vector autoregressive modeling procedure, which indicates that they have gone through a deductive approach of study.   Their methodology indicates that it is an empirical, quantitative and positivist study. Newstead, Taylor,   Kennedy and Sharp (2009) together brings out the knowledge through two different approaches that if advertising is to be slaes effective in the liong trm, it must firs work in short term and advertising typically as a half-life of three to four weeks. The two approaches they used are aggregate-level analysis from experimental split cable test marketing environments and individual-level (2009, p.207). Esteve and Requena (2006) tires to examine the relationship between advertising and sales across the market segments of the UK car industry over the period of 1971-2001 (total of 31 observations). They have also used the Model with Multiple structural Breaks to check whether the long-run advertising sales link is stable over time, proposed by Bai and Perron (1998, 2003a, 2003b). Few hypothesis were also st regarding the advertisment sales relationship which indicates that it is ia deductive approach and the methodlogy of the article suggested that it is a quantitative n positiv ist mode of study. Kim (2005)   investigate the advertising-sales relationship in the annual Lydia Pinkham data . Here the botstrap method is used as an alternative to the asympthotic method exclusively adopted by past studies. The orthogonalized impulse response analysis based on bivariate auto-regressive (AR) model is conducted (2005, p.348). Sample size of only 54 was   set   and the bootstrap method of Efron and Tibshirani (1993) was choosen. The articles doesnt discuss a proper methodolocial system which they have used, rather it is moreinto data details and estimation results. It is a quantitative and positivist aproach of study. Overall, this paper finds evidence of one-way causalty from advertising to sales. Zhou, Zhou and Ouyang (2005) further study the effect of short-term advertising on long-term sales of consumer durable and nondurables in China by cross-sectional times-series television advertising and sales data. This model is not only directional but also measures the quantitative magnitude of the persistence effect of specific variable (2005, p.47). Sales Data of 45 months from the retail stores were coverd.   Advertising data included television advertising expenditures covering all of the television channels in Shanghai (2005, p.48). This articles clearly outline the methodolgy and it is a quantitative positivist approach. (Bryman Bell, 2007)Yoo and Mandhachitra (2003) analysed the effects in a competitive setting. The longitudinal data on Scotch Whisky brands in thiland were choosen. The sample size was 90 and it was collected over a period of 7 hours 6 months. Sales data were obtained from the Excise Department of Thailand based on liquor taxes, and the monthly advertising spending data in print and broadcast media came from the AC Nielsen Media Monitoring Service and the Media Data Resources Inc. Danaher, bonfrer and Dhar specifically examine two categories; liquid laundry detergent and raisin bran cereals. This is because these items are considerd as the top most household product. Sales data from grocerry shops, advertising data from Arbitrons spot television commercial monitoring service and Broadcast Advertising Reports are taken(2008, p.217). For this study the research only considerd the Television adverisement data, which might lead to missconception because there are also other forms of media available for advertisement.   It is more into equation and statistical analysis which leads to quantitative research. Advertising Effect on Sales Hsu, Darrat and Zhong (2002) re-examine the Galbraithian hypothesis that advertising increases with disposible income and promotes sales, but the result for USA reject the Galbraithian hypothesis.   But unlike Chowdhurys bivrate results, their broader model suggest that there is a reliable relationship between advertising and sales. They also states that consumers view advertising as the companys way to conver confidence in their product. (2002, p.188). Whereas Newstead, Taylor,   Kennedy and Sharp found that advertisements work immediately and the strength of the effect verymuch influence the toal sales effect.   They also found an interesting point thet advertising exposure typically has a half life of three to four weeks (2009, p.210). Zhou, Zhou and Ouyang, concluded that longterm advertising have impacts on sales of consumer durable and nondurables. Yoo and Mandhachitra (2003) and Danaher, Bonfrer and Dhar (2008) both took it frther to competitive advertisment. Although a dvertisers have probably suspected that high levels of competitive interference reduce the effect of advertising on sales, until now, the magnitude of the reduction has not been quantified (2008, p. 222) their findings make contribution to three new areas of methodological, substantive and advertising practice. Esteve and Requena, (2006) observed substantial shift in the estimated coefficients of the long-run elasticity. In the last period, there was a notable rise in the long-run elasticity of advertising on sales. Leach and Reekie (1996) stated that sales are determined by past as well as current advertising expenditures, but that the cumulative effects of advertising lasts for months rather than years. Conclusion From most of the article it has been seen that they are positivistic, and quantitative research. It may be because to find out the relationship between Advertisement and sales, it requires statistical analysis. More or less every of the article concludes that advertising has effect on sales. Very few researches have been conducted regarding this area, which leaves opportunity for the potential researcher in this field. One of the other limitations of the study is the availability of data. It is hard to get the data based on the product category, and it is also that there are many types of advertisements available. Thus which advertisements actually affect the sales of the product is a question to be asked. As Hsu, Darrat and Zhong (2002, p.188) stated that from a broader model consistently suggest that there is a reliable relationship between advertising and sales, but one in which sales lead advertising rather than vice versa. Adaptation of Heart of Darkness to the Movie, Apocalypse Now :: Movie Film Comparison Compare Contrast

Adaptation of Heart of Darkness to the Movie, Apocalypse Now I chose to do this essay on the idea of story adaptation, and why changes are made to a story. I originally wanted to look at it just in terms of Apocalypse Now, and how the story of Heart of Darkness was updated to fit a different environment and time period, while still being true to many of the events, characters, ideas and themes presented in the story. I was curious about what changes were made, and what that indicated about how the director, and maybe society as a whole, felt about some concept that maybe were no longer acceptable or satisfactory. However, when I started looking also at the biographical information about Conrad, it became clear that the story itself is an adaptation of sorts. Even though I already knew that Conrad had taken a trip similar to one Marlow takes, I had not been aware of the 'departures of adaptation' that were made to the story. In 1890 Conrad was given a captain's commission of a steamboat on the Congo, due to the influence of a female relative. He traveled down the coast and up the river, and hiked 200 miles overland to reach his boat, which was sunk. But from that point on the story is a departure. Conrad, rather than waiting and fixing the boat, enlisted on another steamboat and traveled up river, getting very sick along the way. On the way back down the river, the captain was sicker than he was, so he got to captain the boat then. When he finally reached the station where the boat he had a commission for was supposed to be waiting, he found that his job had been given to someone else, so he r eturned to England. So why did he take what starts out looking like a fictionalized autobiographical account, and then half way through the story start being totally fictional? The important changes made seems to be that he is in charge of the boat, and thus is in control of his own journey to the heart of darkness. The other is the significance of the Kurtz character.  Ã‚   Prof Abel mentioned Kurtz was loosely based on someone named Klein, but presumably the significance of Kurtz is much more symbolic than biographical. Perhaps Conrad creates Kurtz to embody the issues that he thought about during his trip on the Congo, but which never actually personified themselves so concretely.

Twelve Hours Essay -- Papers

Twelve Hours 6.42 p.m. January 17th The doors signalled the end. They signalled the end of the journey, the end of the obsessive excuse making and theory-formulating process that had lead him here. It was these doors that told him it was over; he had now to face reality. He often considered them as the gates to hell, by the very nature of what goes on behind them. His hatred for the place ran deep; it was a constant occurrence on his timeline that now rested at June 17th, 1989. 1989, he thought to himself. 2 years now this place had been part of his life. Two years of visits, crying and emotional breakdown. Two years of constant fluctuations in his marital life that lead him to question his sanity. The close examination of the degree of sanity that he may possess that had brought him here thus far. Madness? He sometimes thought so. Now, yet again, the outlook was bleak. Was this a chapter in his life that was going to be closed here tonight, on this very godforsaken night? So, here he was, in front of those doors again. I look back fondly. When life was to be lived and where death was something that never touched you or affected you in anyway. Death? Here, yet again I find myself talking about death. Maybe it's the nature of the situation that death is obviously the outcome. Have I a right to speak like this? No? I believe I have. Two years in the spectrum of life is a long time. Wars are fought in less time, friendships forged and relationships ruined. Two years ago, two long years, which now I look back and try and gather some reason for the time I have spent savaged by my own emotions. Often it is the sun dappled path ... ...mself, question why he left it so late to tell the woman he loved just how much he loved her. The scene rests on the moment he laid himself over his wife. We sit still watching the quiet crying of a man in great pain. The memories he held of her would be with him forever. As the scene gently fades into obscurity and the colour is washed out into a grey nostalgic item a sense of calm quells up inside. The loss of human life means so much more than this sentence would suggest. No words can describe what emotions we have without someway distorting the truth and removing the uniqueness and individuality of the love. That is why I will not end this story with a common and mediocre ending, for it deserves so much more. That is why I will leave it up to you and let you decide an ending that is justified and meaningful to you.

MU5. 2 Paper on children and young people’s development at local conference Task one The sequence and rate of development that would normally be expected in children and young people from birth to 19 years. Children’s do not develop at the same rate as each another . Every child has different rate of Development Areas of development: These are the main areas of development 1. Physical development 2. Social development 3. Intellectual development 4. Language development As there will be difference of children progress at the same rate . The below is the guide on how they might develop for the following age’s ranges Age 0 to 3 years 1. Physical development: Babies turn their head towards sounds and movement’s . They like to watch the face of adult at feeding time. They start sitting with support and gradually sit alone . They raise their hand and aspect to be lifted. They try to walk, then will be able to run and use a bicycle. They will try to hold pencil and try to write use the toilet alone. 2. Social development: At the initial months they will recognize mother face and voice they enjoy playing with others and game ticks like peak-boo. They will please adult and perform for the audience. They develop sense of identity. Some want to do themselves. 3. Intellectual development: They begin to realise others are separate beings from themselves. They imitate others and try out ways of behaving in play. They will become more confident but still they need adult support. They will know who their main carers are and cry if they are left with someone they do not know and they begin to understand the world around them. 4. Language development: Initially they make variety of happy sounds. As they grow they will make four to five different sounds and turn their head towards sources of sounds. Then they improve from using single words to complex words. By two they will use 30 to 150 words. After that they put words together into sentence. Ages 3 to 7 years 1. Physical development: They try to walk on tiptoe, walk up and down stairs. They jump with feet together. They will hop. As they grow they will ride bicycle. They climb confidently. They write and will undo buttons and thread beads. 2. Social development: At this age they become more confident and self motivated. They sometimes play co-operatively with other children and will enjoy copying and helping adults 3. Intellectual development, During this stage, children's thought processes are developing, although they are still considered to be far from ‘logical thought', in the adult sense of the word. The vocabulary of a child is also expanded and developed during this stage, as they change from babies and toddlers into ‘little people'. worry about not being liked. Start to understand rules be frightened of things like ghosts. 4. Language Development children will start to talk clearly so anyone can understand them by their 7th birthday they can tell jokes and enjoy conversations. Ages 7 to 13 years 1. Physical Development The children can throw, kick and control a ball, hop and ride a bicycle, use their hands to thread, use scissors well, build models and write clearly by their 12th birthday and use good co-ordination skills. 2. Social Development The children will have a best friend and will worry about not being liked. They will also start to understand rules, start to argue with their parents. They will seem very grown up but also very childish at times. 3. Intellectual development:†During this stage, the thought process becomes more rational, mature and ‘adult like', or more ‘operational', Although this process most often continues well into the teenage years. Adolescents can focus on verbal assertions and evaluate their logical validity without making refence to real-world circumstances. In contrast, concrete operational children can evaluate the logic of statements by considering them against concrete evidence only. 4. language development, The difference between sequence of development and rate of development and why the distinction is important the difference between sequence of development and rate of development and why is the distinction is important is that the speed at which the development happens in an individual child is important because speed does ot necessarily have to do with the sequence also it's important to recognize the difference so you can identify where children need help. The important thing to remember is that all children develop at different rates and may be earlier in achieving some aspects of development and later in others. Families who are poor may have enough money for food, for some clothes and for heating, but poverty means that there is little money for interesting purchases and exciting lifestyles. Families who depend on benefits have limited life choices. Health status Long term illness, acute illness e. g. meningitis . Health can be affected by low income and a range of socio-economic factors such as access to good-quality health services and shops selling good-quality food at affordable prices. Environment There can be disadvantages to living in poor-quality or high-density housing. These can include noise, pollution, overcrowding, poor access to shops and other facilities, and stress from petty crime. When people are on a low income, household maintenance can become a problem. Poorly maintained housing can create health problems. Cultural background expectations of different groups Genetics Effect of inheritance, e. g. height, skills Social class Impact of long term poverty, attitudes to educational development, poor neighborhoods Gender Different rates of growth for girls and boys Family background Different expectations for development, love and support. Task two Children and young peoples development can be influenced by a range of personal factors such as †¢Illness – a childs development may be influenced if they have been suffering from an illness that has caused a delay in them reaching their mile sto nes †¢Child has moved home- if a child has moved home they may feel powerless, alone, fearful, angry and afraid to ask for help, or share their feelings, for fear of worrying the adults in their lives even more. Parents have separated, divorced the child can feel confused, unloved and afraid worrying about their parents. †¢Family situation, a parent / sibling may have a serious illness, or family member passed away can make a child have a feeling of not belonging. †¢Family members working long hours unable to give a child love, care and attention. †¢Child may have changed setting or use different child care facilities. †¢Speech and hearing can delay a child in them not being able to communicate their feelings effectively. †¢Social and Emotional wellbeing. Children and young people’s development can be influenced by a range of external factors such as †¢Language- a child who does not speak the native language. †¢Where they live. †¢Isolation- the child may have lived in isolation which has affected their gross motorskills and their language through not socialising with people. Theories of development and frameworks support development that influence current practice by Children have an ability to learn and this should be fostered by the environment around them and the experiences they have. The way in which children learn is therefore important to practioners. It forms a basis for their work. Understanding how children learn and how to support this learning requires knowledge of child development, which in turn can be used to implement the curriculum. Task 3 †¢The importance of early identification of development delay Early intervention can have a significant impact on a child’s ability to learn new skills as well as reduce the need for interventions over time. †¢The Potential risks of late recognition of development delay As the child gets older and begins school without early intervention, the abilities to keep with the learning requirements over time will be difficult for the child. †¢Multi agency teams work together to support all aspects of development in children and young people. Multiagency brings together practitioners from different sectors and professions within the workforce to provide integrated support to children and their families. It makes services more effective and beneficial to children and families by having a wider range of professionals expertise is available to help children and their families. These professionals are able to share information and ideas so a specific child is more likely to get the help and support they need. Integrated setting fosters a reflective, creative and problem solving approach to traditional barriers to working together in a holistic way. Integrated settings seek to build practitioners’ confidence to enable them to contribute to the developing higher status of those working in early years and childcare and empowers practitioners to facilitate change in local practice. How can play and leisure activities be used to support all access of development of children and young children; 1. Areas, resources and materials for different kinds of play reflect the cultural, diversity gender and abilities of children. 2. An environment is set up in a way that is safe, non threatening challenging and stimulating. 3. Sufficient time is given so that children individual interests and needs are identified and supported by the provision of activities or mater ials along with a wide range of materials to allow children choice in their play, for both group or individual play. . Children’s efforts are encouraged and acknowledged and praised children are encouraged to participate in a variety or experiences and to choose activities which support their development. If a child chooses not to participate it is respected. Task 4 Explain how different types of transitions can affect children and young people’s development. Children face transitions with a variety of experience, some positive some negative. They will nearly always be anxious. Faced with some unexpected transitions, like divorce or death, they may feel rejected or guilty, angry or unbearably sad. Awareness of their experience and what might be going through their little heads and giving a sensitive response should help bring them through so that transition leads to a stronger, more confident and rounded individuals. Examples of transitions are †¢birth †¢from milk to solids †¢from crawling to walking †¢from being fed to feeding ourselves †¢from nappies to being trained †¢becoming self aware †¢able to be cared for by others †¢going to nursery †¢going to school †¢developing new skills. Other transitions that some of the children in your care may experience are: †¢a new baby violence/abuse †¢parents divorcing/step parent/new partner †¢a serious illness/accident/death in the family †¢unexpected change of school †¢moving house. It is these early transitions, and how we cope with them that will have the greatest effect on the rest of our emotional development, and on our ability to cope with life’s cha llenges. The child doesn’t usually have to go through the transitions on his own, he will be supported by those around him at home or in nursery, or in education. However, the experience of going through the transition will depend on the kind of response and support he gets from those around him. A child’s early experiences of transitions will have a big effect on how he handles transitions at later stages of his life If we respond warmly, firmly and consistently, even when a child has made a mistake, the child will come through the transition with positive rewards; feeling she belongs, feeling more confident, deepening a trusting relationship with important people around her. Much damage can be done to a child if their feelings are not responded to when some serious change is taking place. Each transition provides the child with a new challenge. He already has a body of experience that now informs his view of the world. This is his mind-set. Mind-sets become almost instinctive and are often associated with strong emotions. A child’s early life experience should be filled with warm, happy and secure emotions because the brain will hardwire these feelings into the mind-set and help the child approach new transitions with confidence, even though it might mean letting go of some familiar rules and trusting new ones. Creating this trust through a transition is the work of the responsible adults round him. This is a particular challenge when the child is older because there is more hard wiring in the brain and mind-sets are getting more established even in the three and four year old Explain the importance of children and young people having positive relationships through periods of transition. Task 5 Explain different methods of assessing, recording and monitoring children and young peoples development. Summative assessments done over a long period and makes statements about the child’s achievements at a particular point in time so that their progress can be tracked. EYFS Profile is the summative assessment completed by practitioners at the end of the EYFS. It summarises children’s progress towards the early learning goals. Examples of observations are Formative assessment is the type of assessment is type of assessment done every day when you observe children noting their interests and abilities. These assessments are based on observations, photographs, video, things children have made or drawn and information from parents. It informs or guides everyday planning. Observations Practioners observe children by watching what they are doing and how they are behaving †¢Seeing what they can do and what they are achieving †¢Noticing their reactions to new situations and opportunities and what particularly interests each child. †¢Being alert to any changes in their behavior, identify any unexpected changes in behavior or certain patterns and including the possibility of abuse †¢Recognizing when they move on to new skills Time s ampling Observing a child you have chosen for pre planned periods throughout the day. This method helps a practioner to get to know a child’s interests and is also a useful method should their be some concern about the child eg interacting with other children. Event sampling Observing a child at regular intervals of particular events or behavior. This method is useful for monitoring behavior. Structured Observation Setting up an organized situation to enable you observe how a child is progressing with a particular skill. Participative observation Observation carried out when you and the child are engaged in an activity together. this method enables you to check on what activities you share with the children show about what they are able to do and achieve, what they are ready to move on to and what they are interested in. Target child observation This observation is used to find out whether children are getting worthwhile experiences in a group if they are being challenged. Explain how and in what circumstances different methods are used for assessing recording and monitoring children and young peoples development in the work setting Explain how different types of interventions can promote outcomes for children and young people where development is not following the pattern normally expected. Speech and language can help children overcome most of their problems. By helping children gain the ability to use language they can help children gain confidence and self esteem I have seen this in my setting with children who have had communication and language needs. These children have gained confidence and their language is now at a level that they can interact with other children and not show frustration. This is because they can now express themselves. The Senco in an educational setting give support to children and families with special needs this person/s is also responsible for identification of special needs. Additional learning support staff works within and outside schools providing a range of services to help children who have certain specific educational needs. This might include people like teaching assistants or advisors to provide support and train staff. Youth justice this is based on children with behavioural problems these people will work with them and social workers to help them. Social workers are there to help vulnerable children and young people and their families this might include children on the child protection register or disabled children. Psychologist is a professional who helps support children who have learning or behavioural difficulties. They provide teachers and practitioners with aimed support programmes for that child once they have identified the child’s needs. A specialist nurse provides support for the family and child especially if that child suffers from medical conditions that need specialist care Also health visitors come under this title for measuring and assessing a child’s development . A psychiatrists is a doctor who is trained in mental health problems this person works alongside other professionals to help diagnose or support children and young people with mental health problems. Physiotherapist this professional help children with their movement especially those who have little or no movement they are trained to get the maximum movement and skill level. Referrals can take the shape of common assessment form which are filled in then in my setting passed upstairs to the health visitor, speech therapist or other health professionals that are required after being checked by the senco in the room. Speech and language also have their own referral forms which will be filled in and checked by the senco before being passed to the speech and language therapists. Early years action plans and plus plans are filled out and passed to the senco who will then speak to an education psychologist. With primary and secondary schools they also have school action plans which will be run through their senco and the school run individual learning plans. Evaluate the importance of accurate documentation regarding the development of children and young people.

Execute a Training Bond Essay

Knowledge is an immeasurable, unique and rich possession which when impacted cannot be retrieved. Knowledge doesn’t decrease when it is given, in fact, knowledge is power. Knowing I can be financially independent and comfortable if I’m given the opportunity to become part of Access bank and also with the knowledge that a training bond can be regarded as the first step to helping me achieve that, then yes, that is the major reason why I want to execute it. I want to execute the training bond program because the incentives associated with it are universal and include increasing one’s earning potential and acquiring additional skills and abilities that are attractive to any organization. Training and development are important factors that would help me develop talent, motivation, and leadership skills that will contribute to a successful personal and professional career. A training bond is an important factor to the success of any organization. As an employee I would like to be a valuable asset that will add to the success of the company and I want to execute the training bond because I believe it will help me achieve that. A training bond supports and makes possible the development of new skills and knowledge. I want to execute the training bond because I know it will polish my abilities at various levels within the organization and assist me in developing the necessary skills and proficiency to be successful in my career as well as prepare for new responsibilities. I support the reasonable implementation of training bonds or training agreements simply because I agree that companies must secure the recovery of their training investments. When they send people to training and the employees acquire important skills, they naturally increase their market value. Trained workers are far more attractive to competiting firms than regular run off the mill workers and companies who overlook the importance of tend to poach qualified employees from their competitors. The Access bank School of banking excellence is a well recognized training platform on the African continent that provides an extensive program which develops the competencies of prospective employees as well as harnesses their commitment to Access bank.
